Celes is a ex-general for the Emperor. She was a product of genetic enginneering, created to be a powerful soldier. She was infused with magic when she was young, and pretty soon became a general for the Empire, carrying out orders such as torching Maranda and bring fear to the Emperor's reign. However, she became aware of the evilness in the Emperor's actions, and chose to betray him. The Empire had her locked up in South Figaro, where she was rescued by Locke, who was trying to sneak out of South Figaro.

She first appeared to be very cold, which was probably due to the environment she grew up with. The only one that cared about her when she was serving the Empire was Cid, whom she looks up to as a father figure. Even though she seemed to have a tough exterior, she actually has an emotional side in her, one that yearns for love and care from others, which she finds in Locke. When the world was destroyed, Celes lost the will to live as she thought Locke was dead. But then she realized that Locke and the others may not be dead yet, so she went on a quest to search for her lost companions, but most of all, she was hoping to find the person she needed most - Locke.

Celes is your third best magic user, and she is pretty powerful too. This makes her one of the best character to use; however, her 'Runic' command becomes virtually useless near the second half of the game.
