When I first started playing FF6 I had a rather negative view on the game. Why? Well, because when I started playing it, it was around 1998, and I have never heard of FF6 until a friend recommended it to me. Since I played FF7 before I played FF6, the downgraded graphics was kind of turning me off. However, after a month of playing it, it became my favorite RPG. FF6 is a great example of how a game doesn't have to rely on flashy graphics.
What's the best thing about FF6? The music, of course! I absolutely love the tracks in the game. Who cares if the sound is only in 16-bit? The melodies are great, even better than FF7 and FF8 in my opinion. The most memorable track is probably the Opera song, but others are really good too, like the ending theme, where each character's theme song is combined to make one stunning piece that makes the ending enjoyable. I also liked the storyline of FF6. Beautiful, and also meaningful as it shows how precious life really is. There are tons of memorable quotes in FF6, some funny, some meaningful. FF6 also has a dozen full of interesting characters, all with different background and personalities. When you play the game I'm sure you'll like at least one of them. The gameplay of FF6 is good too. I find the Esper system better than materia and GFs, and you don't have to go through a long process of customizing your character. I personally don't like customized characters because it takes time and makes every character similar to each other in battles, thus eliminating the need of changing characters...
So what's the bad in FF6? Well, the graphics is nothing to shout about. They're probably excellent compared to the 1994 standard, but this is 2000 where everything is made much more realistic. The CG in Final Fantasy Anthology is pretty good, but there's only 3 FMV movies.
As much as I like the main storyline, there are a few plot holes which I thought could be explained better, like what happened to the Returners during the World of Ruins, who exactly is Ultros and Sigfried, etc. Also, since there are so many characters, even though we know how the characters behave, minor characters like Relm and Strago remains pretty much undeveloped.
Overall, I still think FF6 is excellent and it is still my most favorite RPG of all time.
